Torbay Adoption Service

Change a child's life

Stage One is adopter led. There will be a one day training session for you to attend, as well as other learning that you can do at home. Adopter’s will be expected to keep a learning portfolio.

During this Stage we will also ask for references from your family and friends as well as completing checks such as a medical by your GP, local authority and police Disclosure and Barring Service  (formally CRB).

We have responsibility for the care and safety of children we ‘look after’ and we have to ensure the prospective adopters are thoroughly checked and vetted for their suitability to take on this responsibility. The Medical Advisor is generally looking for you to be fit and well enough to see a child through to adulthood at the point of adoption.

We will guide you through Stage One and answer any queries or concerns you may have please contact the office on 01803 208780

This stage will usually take no longer than two months and at the end we will let you know if you can proceed to Stage Two. If you want you can take a break between Stage One and Stage Two of the process but this can't be any longer than six months.
